"I’m often asked why I left banking to become a mortgage broker from clients and colleagues alike. A major factor is that mortgages were always my favourite part of finance. When I was dealing with investments, I’m making a wealthy person wealthier. There’s nothing wrong with that, but I didn’t find it very exciting. With mortgages, on the other hand, I felt that I was truly making a difference in people’s lives. I’ve had people come to me with great amounts of debt and they felt they had no way out of it. They had been declined from other bankers and felt there was no hope. I fought for those clients. I even remember my manager once asking me ‘why are you wasting your time on this file?’ I didn’t give up on that file. It took some time, but we got the job done. It kept them out of bankruptcy, saved them $40,000.00 in the next five years and made them in control of their lives again. I had a reputation for not giving up on files. Before I was only fighting with my own credit department. Now I represent clients with many banks. It isn’t that much different, except that if one bank says no and absolutely won’t budge, I can always go to the next one! I also liked helping people getting into their first home. Without this step, I knew that a person would probably go through their lives without ever gaining any serious wealth. But I was able to help them start actually growing their assets. Getting your first home is always the toughest, so I enjoyed that very much. And lastly, I’m very competitive. I always like to give the best in service and rates. When I was a banker, I knew that people would get lower interest rates going through a broker than I was allowed to give. It was very frustrating to have a client go to a broker, and have that broker arrange the mortgage at my bank, my branch in fact, and give them better terms than if they dealt with me. How can I be giving the best service if they get better rates through a broker? So I decided that getting them the advice I always have, and getting them the best rates available was the way to go. The fact that I can do this and never charge them sounds like the type of business model I want to use."
